Dyer Brown has completed a refreshed reimagining of The Mother Church Christian Science Reading Room in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The sustainably designed renovation adds a fresh, welcoming face to the Reading Room, adjacent to The Christian Science Plaza, home of The First Church of Christ, Scientist Original (Mother Church) and Extension church edifices.
The design’s arched forms are in harmony with the church edifices. A feature area painted green indicates the retail zone, where a point of sale is located alongside purchasable items, including Bibles, Christian Science literature, children’s books, and music.
Increased to a total of 3,250 square feet by expansion into an adjacent retail floor area, the refreshed Reading Room greets visitors with a completely new storefront and a warm and welcoming seating area perfect for reading and contemplation.
Reading tables of varying heights, cubby-style seating integrated into millwork, and bookshelves, inspire children to embark on their own exploration of materials designed for young readers.
Included in this space is a room for small events hosted by the Reading Room, with a highly acoustic movable glass partition that allows simultaneous use for gatherings and visitors. The space also includes a breakroom, and other back-of-house spaces that support the staff members.
